Hormonal coils - Mirena - Kyleena - Jaydess
The hormone IUDs consist of a small flexible plastic T with a control and return thread. Unlike the copper-based IUDs, they contain the hormone progestogen and thus combine the effect of the IUD with that of the mini-pill.
There are currently three different hormone IUDs on the market: Mirena, Kyleena and Jaydess. They differ in terms of hormone dose and duration of use. Jaydess is the lowest dose, has a shorter duration of use (3 years) than Mirena and Kyleena (5 years) and is more suitable for women who are looking for a less long-term contraceptive.

Mode of action: The hormones create an impenetrable mucus plug in the cervix, the mobility of the sperm and the build-up of the mucous membrane in the uterus are reduced. Despite the hormones, natural ovulation is maintained.
Insertion: As with all intrauterine contraceptives, the insertion is made through the vagina, through the cervix and into the uterus. During the procedure there may be a pulling pain, but this is generally easy to bear. If desired, we can also insert the hormone coils under a short general anaesthetic.
Possible complaints and complications: In the beginning, intermittent bleeding, acne, breast tenderness and headaches are possible. Rarely, depressive moods can also occur.
Position control: The position of the IUD can be checked at any time via the retrieval thread that protrudes from the cervix. In addition, regular ultrasound examinations are recommended every 6 months to ensure the contraceptive effect. A check after the first menstrual period is particularly important.
Removal: A retrieval thread allows the copper IUDs to be removed without any problems. After one to two monthly cycles, fertility has returned to normal.
Duration of use: Jaydess up to 3 years, Mirena and Kyleena up to 5 years.
Safety: Very high safety with a Pearl index of 0.2 - 0.3.
Costs: The insertion of an IUD is a self-pay service and is not covered by the health insurance.
For whom is a hormone coil recommended? The hormone IUDs are particularly suitable for women who want long-term and safe contraception and suffer from particularly heavy and painful menstrual bleeding. The periods often become weaker, shorter and less painful with the hormone IUDs.
