The vaccination against Covid 19 is now recommended by the Standing Commission on Vaccination (STIKO) now also recommends vaccination for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Since pregnant women have an increased risk of a severe course of Covid 19 disease, this recommendation is good news and makes it easier for us to advise our pregnant patients.

Vaccination with an mRNA vaccine (BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna) has proven to be very effective against symptomatic and severe courses of SARS-CoV-2 infection. So far, there are no indications of frequent pregnancy-related side effects due to the vaccination. Even if the data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy is still limited at present, the risk-benefit assessment speaks in favour of a general vaccination recommendation for unvaccinated pregnant women from the 2nd trimester of pregnancy, i.e. from the 13th week of pregnancy.
